Turkish footballer Mehmet Topal escaped gunshot unharmed after gunmen fired on his bulletproof car in Istanbul. Two or three shots was fired at Topal, 29, who was driving back home from training with his team-mate Mert Zeybek on Tuesday. His team-mate was also unhurt. The reason for the incident, which the club has described as an “armed terrorist” attack is yet unclear. Fernebahce team bus was shot at earlier this year in the city of Trabzon and the driver was wounded. Turkey’s top-flight Super Lig was suspended for a week following the team bus attack and president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, subsequently called a meeting of the league’s18 club captains. Immediately after Tuesday’s attack which took place in a road in Istanbul’s eastern Sancaktepe district, Topal parked his car and called for police help. Pictures released by the club showed bullet damage on the passenger side of the windscreen, which luckily was not smashed by the missile.
