A former Governor of Delta State in Nigeria from 29 May 1999 to 29 May 2007 under the platform of People’s Democratic Party. On 13 May 2010, Ibori was arrested in Dubai, United Arab Emirates under Interpol arrest warrants, issued from United Kingdom courts

 

 

 

Diepreye Solomon Peter Alamieyeseigha (“DSP”)

was Governor of Bayelsa State from 29 May 1999 to 9 December 2005.  Diepreye Alamieyeseigha was detained in London on charges of money laundering in September 2005. At the time of his arrest, Metropolitan police found about £1m in cash in his London home. On July 26, 2007, Alamieyeseigha pleaded guilty before a Nigerian court to six charges and was sentenced to two years in prison on each charge. He died on Oct 10, 2015 of cardiac arrest.

 

 

 

Olabode Ibiyinka George

Bode George Military Governor of Ondo State, and later Chairman of the Nigerian Ports Authority, then national vice-chairman in the southwest zone of the PeoplesDemocratic Party (PDP). In October 2009 he was sentenced to a 30 month jail term for charges that included contracts splitting and inflation

John Yusuf Yakubu, the pension funds thief, was convicted of stealing 23 billion Naira but was asked to go to jail for two years or pay a fine of N750,000. A judgement that sparked A LOT of controversies. This prompted the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC to come back for him.

 

They instituted another charge before the courts on account of which he was ordered to be kept at Kuje Prisons pending trial.

 

Mustafa Adebayo Balogun

Tafa Balogun, was appointed Inspector General of the Nigerian Police in March 2002 and was forced to retire because of widespread charges of corruption in January 2005. On 4 April 2005, Tafa Balogun was arraigned at the Federal High Court, Abuja on charges involving about N13 billion obtained through money laundering, theft and other sources.The EFCC  brought 70 charges against Tafa Balogun covering the period from 2002 to 2004. He made a plea bargain with the court in exchange for returning much of the property and money. He was sentenced to six months in jail.

 

However, a lot of you would agree that John Elias’ sentence would be the most deserving in recent times as many have argued that the punishments of those public officers, who went to jail for fraud related offences were far lighter that the offence.
