Rio 2016 Olympics: All Russian Weightlifters Banned For Doping

Russia’s entire weightlifting team has been banned by the International Weightlifting Federation from the Rio 2016 Olympics.

Russia’s weightlifting team is made up of 8 athletes, with the IWF handing out the ban for what it called “extremely shocking” results that brought the sport into “disrepute.”

Russia have however planned to appeal the decision, with Sports Minister Vitaly Mutkov confirming that an appeal will be made this weekend to the Court Of Arbitration For Sport.

Mutko said: “CAS now works 24 hours a day, so today or tomorrow we will support our athletes and try to get them restored to the team.”

The International Olympic Committee decided not to issue a blanket on the entire Russian Olympic team, but left it up to individual sporting bodies to handle it. Apart from weightlifting, all of Russia’s track and field athletes have been banned from the Olympics.
